AEW Dynamite recap, reactions (Sep. 9, 2026): Rebel saves the day
AEW did an excellent job weaving real life serious issues with an exciting wrestling program to advance toward the All Out PPV. Dynamite (Sep. 9, 2026) was the special Rebel Heart episode in honor of Tanea Brooks (aka Rebel, not Reba) to bring awareness to ALS. Brooks is suffering from terminal ALS. Plus, there was the sad news over the weekend that Butcher died. Instead of a dour mood, AEW did what they do best to provide a positive evening of entertainment. The show featured Dr. Britt Baker DMD returning to the ring with a helping hand from Rebel, the in-ring debut of Sting’s son (Steven Borden), tension simmering between Jon Moxley and Will Ospreay, and more from Akins Ford Arena in Athens, GA. Rebel saves the day Rebel made her first appearance of the night in the return of Dr. Britt Baker DMD’s talk show, The Waiting Room. Rebel gets a new nickname while helping heel Britt Baker win her AEW return match
Prior to tonight’s (Sept. 9) special Rebel Heart episode of Dynamite, Dr. Britt Baker DMD had not wrestled a match since November 2024. That changed when she returned to the ring tonight for a trios match with Hikaru Shida and TBS Champion Persephone against Thunder Rosa, Hyan, and Maya World. Rebel (not Reba) returned to AEW earlier in the show, where she reprised her role as Baker’s comedy sidekick. Even though Rebel was diagnosed with terminal ALS earlier this year, she remained true to her heel form by rolling down to the ring during Baker’s match to assist her on the Lockjaw finish. She even had the phrase “Roll Model” written in big letters on the back of her chair, playing off Baker’s “Role Model” nickname. Rebel (not Reba) returns to AEW in Dr. Britt Baker’s waiting room
Tonight’s (Sept. 9) Rebel Heart episode of Dynamite featured Rebel’s emotional return to AEW programming, after she was diagnosed with terminal ALS earlier this year. They got right into it with Dr. Britt Baker’s “The Waiting Room” talk show segment, which hyped up a trios match for later in the night pitting heels Baker, Hikaru Shida, and TBS Champion Persephone against babyfaces Thunder Rosa, Hyan, and Maya World. Baker embraced Rebel and praised her inspiring fight against ALS, while also bringing back their “not Reba” bit from years ago. Rebel delivered her brand of comedy on the mic and with her facial expressions, and also had the final line about Baker’s glove. Check out Rebel’s AEW return in “The Waiting Room” for yourself. Saturday night is alright for fighting, and AEW is jamming the card with nine matches for Collision (July 18, 2026) from Boston, Mass. AEW says this former titleholder is ‘out indefinitely’ after new champ’s attack
Hikaru Shida won the TBS title vacated by the recently returned Willow Nightingale in Survival of the Fittest earlier this month. Shida defended her title last Saturday on AEW Collision against Nightingale’s former AEW Tag titleholding partner Harley Cameron. The champ got a submission win over the multi-talented Australian, but Shida’s getting into her heel groove and wasn’t going to settle for the tap out. Cameron was spared too much of a post-match beating thanks to the arrival of Queen Aminata… … but it turns out the damage had been done. On Dynamite last night (July 15), commentary mentioned that Cameron is “out of action indefinitely”. There’s been no reporting on a legitimate injury to Harley. But while we can’t rule one out, this would add motivation for someone like Nightingale or Kris Statlander to end Shida’s reign.
