WWE SmackDown recap & reactions (July 14, 2026): Spicing Things Up
WWE is back with the go home SmackDown prior to Saturday Night’s Main Event but it almost feels silly to say that because this upcoming SNME felt pretty unimportant going into this show. Let’s see if they could change our mind on that. Find all the results from that show at Claire’s wonderful live blog here. Stipulation Creative certainly did try to spice up SNME by adding a stipulation to the big Cody Rhodes/CM Punk vs. Sami Zayn/Gunther tag match set for tomorrow. That stip being if Sami & Gunther win, they get added to the WWE title match at SummeSlam. Certainly not insignificant. Acting GM Adam Pearce interrupted a ranting Gunther to inform him of this. First he let the Career Killer know that the reason he’s not fired after his unprovoked attack on GM Nick Aldis last week is because Aldis himself pleaded with management to keep tomorrow’s match intact. That includes that above mentioned stipulation that Aldis had planned all along. Now part of that feels like bull because it see

GUNTHER is rewarded with a potential SummerSlam main event after attacking Nick Aldis
One week after GUNTHER destroyed SmackDown GM Nick Aldis, the Ring General kicked off tonight’s (July 17) episode to address his actions. As you might expect, GUNTHER blamed Aldis for everything that happened, all because the GM prevented him from winning the WWE championship over the last few months. Acting GM Adam Pearce interrupted at that point to read him the riot act and say GUNTHER would be fired if he pulled that same stunt on Raw. He should actually thank Aldis, because he’s the one who insisted that GUNTHER’s tag team match (with Sami Zayn) against WWE Champion CM Punk and Cody Rhodes goes on as planned this weekend (July 18) at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Madison Square Garden. More importantly, GUNTHER should have waited to fully hear what Nick had to say before he attacked. He would have learned that the SNME tag match actually has high stakes; if GUNTHER and Zayn win, they will be added to the SummerSlam main event match of Punk vs. Rhodes on the weekend of August 1 &

WWE will crown an interim women’s champion instead of forcing Rhea Ripley to vacate her belt
Raw GM Adam Pearce is in control of SmackDown tonight, where there is “a ton to address.” One of those issues is the status of WWE Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley, who has been out of action since she suffered an injury on WWE’s European tour in early June. SummerSlam takes place on the weekend of August 1 & 2, which is roughly two weeks from now. WWE needed to find a solution ASAP for what’s going with Ripley’s belt on that show, and they just announced it a short while ago. Instead of forcing Rhea to vacate her title, WWE will instead crown an interim champion with a ladder match at SummerSlam. BREAKING NEWS: Due to Rhea Ripley’s injury, Adam Pearce has announced that an interim WWE Women's Champion will be crowned at #SummerSlam in a Ladder Match! pic.twitter.com/kNIXz41D1g — WWE (@WWE) July 17, 2026 There are no details yet on how many stars will compete in this interim title ladder match. I would expect Charlotte Flair and Jade Cargill to be in the mix, so perhaps their long-awai

A warning to SmackDown: Watch out for Adam Pearce
Raw General Manager Adam Pearce will once again steer the ship tonight on SmackDown in place of Nick Aldis. Last week, Gunther attacked SmackDown’s GM at the end of the show, setting up Pearce as tonight’s substitute and leaving him with “a ton to address.” As Your Noble Scribe, it’s my duty to remind you what happened the last time Pearce ran the blue brand. He booked a title match between then-Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes. However, he booked it for Raw, not SmackDown. At the time, it struck many as an odd decision. But in reality, it all made perfect sense. With SummerSlam looming, WWE quickly needed to set up an Undisputed Championship match for the event. It accomplished that by writing Rhodes off with an injury, paving the way for hometown hero CM Punk to step in at Chicago’s Raw and defeat Zayn for the title. Now, Punk will face Rhodes in a huge title fight at SummerSlam. Again, reality. Me? I deal in kayfabe. I judge the characters by their motivations and d

WWE SmackDown preview (July 17, 2026): WWE somehow forgot to book a card for SmackDown
SmackDown airs tonight with a live show emanating from MVP Arena in Albany, New York. This is the third episode of SmackDown during the five week build to SummerSlam, which takes place on the weekend of August 1. WWE somehow forgot to book a card for SmackDown Saturday Night’s Main Event is scheduled for tomorrow night (July 18) and SummerSlam is around the corner after that, but tonight’s episode of SmackDown got the cold shoulder from WWE creative. As of this writing, zero matches have been announced for the show. There’s a somewhat decent kayfabe excuse for this happening, as GM Nick Aldis was just reinstated last week, only to be taken out by GUNTHER two hours later. Aldis didn’t book any matches for tonight’s show during the two hours when he was conscious last Friday night, and he’s presumably been incapacitated ever since. That means Raw GM Adam Pearce is once again the man in charge of the blue brand tonight, where he says there is “a ton to address.” Who knows, maybe it will t

WWE has ‘a ton to address’ on SmackDown now that Nick Aldis is out as GM again
WWE placed SmackDown GM Nick Aldis on administrative leave at the end of June after he put his hands on GUNTHER at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia. Things returned to normal at the beginning of last week’s (July 10) episode of SmackDown when Aldis announced he was officially reinstated. His first order of business back in the GM seat was to book WWE Champion CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam. By the end of the night, Aldis was beaten and destroyed by GUNTHER for excluding him from that WWE title match. With all of that in mind, Raw GM Adam Pearce just posted this video a short while ago explaining that because of what happened last week, he is once again the acting General Manager of SmackDown for tomorrow night’s (July 17) episode in Albany, New York. In his “mini-preview” of SmackDown, Pearce simply said there is “a ton to address, and I will do just that.” Your OFFICIAL #SmackDown Mini-Preview for TOMORROW NIGHT in Albany! 📺: 8e/5p LIVE on @usanetwork around the world on @

A friend of Sami Zayn’s and one of CM Punk’s enemies react to WWE Raw title change
As I wrote about in my review of last Friday’s SmackDown, I’d been bracing myself for the outcome of the Undisputed WWE championship match on Raw last night (July 6) since we learned it was happening last week. Still, I was bummed for my guy Sami Zayn when CM Punk replaced Cody Rhodes and beat Zayn to end his brief run with WWE’s top prize. And reactions around Cageside Seats definitely seem to be trending negative, with only 14% having an enthusiastic reaction to the title change as of this writing: But the crowd in Punk’s hometown of Chicago certainly loved it, and we’re frequently reminded that the internet is not real life. But it’s what we have to go on, and it’s not hard to find critics of the move on social media. Like long-time friend of Zayn, and someone who finally believe what he’s been telling her about how WWE management conspires against them. Sami’s old Mixed Match Challenge partner Becky Lynch has her own beef with Raw General Manager Adam Pearce. Add another grievance…

CM Punk returns to Raw in Chicago, wins WWE championship
This week’s episode of Monday Night Raw in Chicago was supposed to be headlined by Sami Zayn defending the WWE championship against Cody Rhodes. Then GUNTHER, who had been sent home for a confrontation with SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis but was in town apparently for a meeting with management about said confrontation, attacked Rhodes backstage. He bloodied the former champ and beat him up just enough that Cody was no longer medically cleared to compete. Zayn celebrated, thinking he was getting off scot free, and surely dreaming up new social media posts with his precious title. Instead, Raw General Manager Adam Pearce informed him that he promised a WWE championship match for the fine folks of Chicago, and damn it they were going to get one. He may as well have announced CM Punk’s return right then and there. Sure enough: CM PUNK IS BACK!!! 😱🔥 Sami Zayn’s mystery opponent is THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!! pic.twitter.com/6qXZ4yL19l — WWE (@WWE) July 7, 2026 Punk vs. Zayn had onl

Sami Zayn isn’t the only champion whose title reign is in jeopardy on Raw

Raw General Manager Adam Pearce delivered his weekly show preview on Sunday, reminding fans that there’s not one but three titles on the line this Monday as WWE heads to Chicago’s Allstate Arena.
