AEW Dynamite recap, reactions (July 15, 2026): Redemption main event
There was one big question heading into AEW Dynamite (July 15, 2026). The Redemption PPV is next weekend, and the main event hadn’t been established yet. We received that answer for Kenny Omega’s first world title defense. Plus, three more championship bouts were booked, the Painmaker returned, Mercedes Moné main-evented in her hometown, and more from MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston, Massachusetts. Redemption main event Prior to Dynamite, the only match on the Redemption card was Thekla defending the AEW Women’s World Championship against Willow Nightingale. It was unclear how AEW would proceed in the men’s world title picture. Kenny Omega won the gold last week from MJF, and promotion is full speed ahead for Omega versus Will Ospreay at All In in Wembley Stadium. Who would Omega face at the PPV in between? Casino Gauntlet shakes up AEW Women’s World title scene with return, new alliance
This year, AEW’s Beach Break episode of Dynamite got one of the company’s Casino Gauntlet matches in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This one was to decide who would challenge AEW Women’s World champion Thekla at Redemption on July 26, and ended up changing the outlook for the scene through All In at Wembley a month later. And probably beyond, too. Wednesday’s (July 8) Casino Gauntlet started with Maya World’s latest chance to shock the world. She started with the wrestler she upset to reach the Owen Cup final, Ring of Honor forever Women’s champ Athena. Maya World’s amazing world title chase gets another chance in AEW
Maya World never won on AEW programming prior to June. However, she had something of a miracle run in the Owen Hart Tournament, where she competed in memory of her younger brother. World pulled off a couple of upsets before Mercedes Mone broke everyone’s heart by defeating her in the finals at Forbidden Door. It turns out that loss doesn’t mean World’s amazing AEW world title chase is over. Next week’s (July 8) episode of AEW Dynamite Beach Break will feature a Casino Gauntlet match, where the winner challenges AEW Women’s World Champion Thekla at the Redemption PPV on July 26. Tonight’s (July 2) special Thursday episode of Collision featured two separate matches to determine the first two entrants in that gimmick match. First up was ROH Women’s World Champion Athena scoring a win over Stardom’s Rina with the O-Face. Athena locked up the number one spot in the Casino Gauntlet match with this victory. AEW World Champion Thekla declares that Stardom is dead
Thekla retained the AEW women’s world championship at Forbidden Door (on June 28) against Stardom’s Starlight Kid. Not only did Thekla disrespect Stardom in the buildup to the match, but she cut off Kid’s mask, spit in it, and attacked Stardom President Dumb Bitch Taro Okada after the match was over. On tonight’s (July 2) special Thursday episode of Collision, Thekla cut a promo wearing Starlight’s mask where she declared that Stardom is now dead.
