Interim champions have their place in wrestling, but not without a cost
WWE will crown an Interim Women’s Champion at SummerSlam. | (Photo: WWE) With WWE Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley sidelined with a knee injury, WWE announced Friday that a ladder match to crown an interim champion will take place at SummerSlam. The decision follows a practice long used in MMA, which took its lead from boxing. In the 1990s, the World Boxing Association introduced the concept to keep championships active when a champion couldn’t defend because of injury or illness. When the champion returned, the interim titleholder would become the mandatory challenger. Immediately, that created a built-in marquee match to determine the true champion. Historically in pro wrestling, injured champions were often stripped of their titles, and a new champion was crowned. That tradition was eventually challenged by AEW, which popularized the concept of interim champions, leading to a fiery storyline in 2022. WWE doesn’t know how much longer women’s champion Rhea Ripley will be out of action due to a torn meniscus. Wade Barrett said it could be a couple of weeks, or it could be a few months. Due to the uncertainty, there will be a ladder match at SummerSlam to crown an interim WWE women’s champ. Qualifying matches began on tonight’s (July 17) episode of SmackDown to determine two of the five ladder match participants. First up was Women’s United States Champion Tiffany Stratton vs. Jacy Jayne. Prior to the match, Tiffy Time reminded fans that SummerSlam is in her home state of Minnesota, and there’s no way she’s missing out on the interim title ladder match. The U.S. champ backed up those words by beating Jayne with the Prettiest Moonsault Ever, after WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Paige and Brie Bella helped take away the rest of Fatal Influence from ringside. WWE will crown an interim women’s champion instead of forcing Rhea Ripley to vacate her belt
Raw GM Adam Pearce is in control of SmackDown tonight, where there is “a ton to address.” One of those issues is the status of WWE Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley, who has been out of action since she suffered an injury on WWE’s European tour in early June. SummerSlam takes place on the weekend of August 1 & 2, which is roughly two weeks from now. WWE needed to find a solution ASAP for what’s going with Ripley’s belt on that show, and they just announced it a short while ago. Instead of forcing Rhea to vacate her title, WWE will instead crown an interim champion with a ladder match at SummerSlam.
