Something about land south of the United States border just agrees with WWE in the TKO era. For most its time as WWE property, AAA’s been the best-booked brand in the company for a year. And when SmackDown came our way from Mexico City on Fri., Sept. 11, 2026, it gave us a fast-paced, enjoyable, eventful two hours of wrestling television. Here’s the internet’s best live blog for that, courtesy of the one and only Claire Elizabeth. Now to answer Randy Orton’s question, which he asked to mock the absent Cody Rhodes… let’s talk about Smackdown, and let’s start with the now-two-time WWE champion(!) Sami Zayn. Sami Zayn wins the WWE championship back from CM Punk
Sami Zayn finally got his one-on-one match for the WWE championship against CM Punk in the main event of this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown in Mexico City. The champ decided he was good and tired of Zayn whining about how unfair it all is that his nine day reign ended the way it did. Zayn recruited Johnny Gargano to try to help him win the title, with the idea the two would square up for the gold once the title changed hands. Sure enough, Johnny Wrestling and his wife, Candice LeRae, were out just in time to ensure the referee didn’t see Sami tapping to the Anaconda Vise. Gargano then ran in with the belt and what ensued was a wild back-and-forth. Gargano was taken out by Punk with a GTS but Kevin Owens was next to run in, grabbing the title to try knocking Zayn out with it. Sami ducked and Punk took the shot. We made it to another Hump Day. Your reward? More rumors, of course. Lead Rumor: Bayley’s situation Bayley returning to WWE television on Monday Night Raw this week was supposed to clear up all the confusion regarding her status with the company. The expectation was if she came back at all, it would likely be because she had signed a new deal. Then, Dave Meltzer outright said that was the case before PW Insider chimed in to say it wasn’t. She has unless she hasn’t, and all that. Fightful has chimed in to say “AEW doesn’t necessarily have that information yet (about Bayley likely re-signing with WWE), and they definitely had high hopes that they would at least be able to make a play for Bayley.” AEW, of course, is where her good friend Mercedes Mone is plying her craft, and they did plenty of teasing for the duo reuniting there. WWE SmackDown preview (July 3, 2026): Sami Zayn’s reign as WWE champion is already in big trouble
SmackDown airs tonight with a taped show (spoilers here) emanating from Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This is the first episode of SmackDown during the five week build to SummerSlam, which takes place on the weekend of August 1. Sami Zayn’s reign as WWE champion is already in big trouble Sami Zayn shocked the world at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia when he pinned Cody Rhodes to become the new WWE champion. Sami is now scheduled to make his first appearance as champ on tonight’s SmackDown, where he will surely have a lot to get off his chest during an emotional victory speech that many fans and colleagues said would never happen.
