ALWAYZ happens: Wrestling’s predictable patterns
A recurring theme in Matt Cardona matches: dude always loses shortly after starting his comeback. | (Photo: Sylvain Lefevre/Getty Images) In today’s Main Event recap, I talked about a recurring pattern in Matt Cardona’s matches: within 90 seconds of hitting the Broski Boot, the former Zack Ryder ends up staring at the lights. That got me thinking: are there other similar constants in wrestlers’ matches? One I think most of us have noticed is that Seth Rollins has seemingly never hit a Phoenix Splash in WWE. This, despite attempting one in nearly every match he’s had. Instead, he lands on his feet, rolls through, and the match continues. In Rollins’ case, it’s not a sign of imminent defeat or even a hint that victory is right around the corner. But for Cardona, it’s especially noticeable because it’s the Bizarro version of Hulk Hogan’s signature ending. Unlike Hogan, who hit his big boot and immediately hit his finisher for the win, Cardona lands his boot, only to lose shortly after.

The episode entitled “Jeff Jarrett and the Battle for TNA – Part III” aired on Vice TV earlier this week and concluded the show’s chronicling of the promotion Jarrett helped create. Hogan signed with TNA in late 2009 alongside Eric Bischoff and debuted in the company in January 2010. Along with wrestling the final matches of his career for TNA, Hogan also served as a creative consultant. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em: Randy Savage put his feelings for Hulk Hogan aside and joined the nWo at SuperBrawl VII. | (Photo: WWE) WWE’s week-long 30th anniversary celebration of the New World Order continued Wednesday, with footage uploaded to YouTube from the night Randy Savage shocked the world and essentially decided, “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.” The event was SuperBrawl VII, which took place February 23, 1997, at San Francisco’s historic Cow Palace. The main event was Hogan defending the WCW Championship against “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. I was there that night, floor level, seated about seven rows back from where WWE’s announcers sit today. To say pandemonium broke out would be an understatement, though depending on where you were sitting, it wasn’t immediately clear what had happened. CM Punk is not a hypocrite for winning the WWE championship like this
If you’ve spent much time on social media in the days following CM Punk’s return in Chicago and subsequent WWE championship victory over Sami Zayn in the main event of Monday Night Raw this week you’ve undoubtedly seen a lot of criticism. They’re calling this man Hulk Hogan for how he ended up looking in this situation. An even more popular term you’ll see often, though, is hypocrite.
