Here’s how WWE will find a top contender to Grayson Waller’s NXT championship
It sure feels like the only way to earn a championship match in WWE anymore is by winning some sort of tournament or a multi-person match, and sometimes a series of them. In the case of the NXT championship, currently held by Grayson Waller, that’s exactly what we’re getting. Waller won the title at Heatwave in a Fatal 4-Way, defeating Tony D’Angelo, Cruz Montana, and Zilla Fatu, and now he needs a challenger. Instead of giving D’Angelo a rematch for free, they put together a six-man tag team match on this week’s episode of NXT television, one made after half the men’s roster established their desire to be next in line. NXT General Manager Robert Stone made it simple: D’Angelo & Saquon Shugars & Mason Rook would take on Montana & EK Prosper & Keanu Carver. The winning team would advance to next week’s episode to a triple threat match that would decide who is the next number one contender to Waller’s title. WWE is missing the boat on one of its best heels
Grayson Waller breaks a kid’s heart during an NXT live event. | (Photo: WWE, Grayson Waller) In my recap of this week’s episode of Main Event, I mentioned how pitting Carmelo Hayes against other fan favorites won’t help to get fans emotionally invested in “H1m.” What I suggested was a program with a heel, someone who could steer the crowd toward Hayes. The perfect guy for that would be Grayson Waller, whose character is easily one of the most unlikeable on WWE’s roster. There’s just one problem. The guy hasn’t been seen on television in almost three months. Some of you reading this are probably saying, “Yeah, I forgot about him.” I can’t blame you. He had a thing going on with the New Day until the group and WWE parted ways. His last appearance was on the April 27 episode of Raw, where he was badgering Raw GM Adam Pearce for an opportunity to prove himself.
