We’ve had some fun with John Cena’s “big announcement” from May’s Backlash premium live event, The John Cena Classic. It wasn’t hard to do and we certainly weren’t alone in cracking wise. As pitched, it’s a night of matches rather than a tournament that will nonetheless crown a champion, and happen at some undetermined point in the future, maybe its own event, maybe an existing one. But Cena’s heart does seem to be in the right place, and his logic sound… other than in the widely-panned “champ who doesn’t have to win his or her match” idea. He wants to give the spotlight to WWE talent who don’t often get a chance to shine, or developmental system prospects and NXT wrestlers who haven’t had an opportunity to wrestle on the main roster at all. In the process, maybe John Cena Classic entrants “grab the brass” ring, or maybe the company realizes they should have put that ring within their grasp earlier.
